Answers to your questions

Thanks for applying! You should have received an email confirmation that your application has been received. We
encourage you to explore our We Are Cisco blog where we highlight employee photos and stories about working at Cisco.

Be prepared. Be unique. Be yourself. Start with a strong, tailored resume that highlights your skills and accomplishments both in and outside the classroom, and includes relevant keywords to help recruiters match you with the right opportunities. Stand out by networking—attend recruitment events, connect on LinkedIn, or reach out to Cisco alumni from your school. Show you're well-rounded by getting involved in meaningful clubs, organizations, or side projects that reflect your passions. Prioritize quality over quantity—actively engage in what you commit to.

First, candidates apply to an open internship. Next, the recruiter and hiring manager review applicant qualifications and decide which candidates will move to an interview round. Finally, selected candidates move through the interview process and the recruiter extends an offer to the final candidate.

The recruiter will share more about what to expect when you are invited to an interview, because the process varies by position. For example, engineering roles typically consist of a behavioral interview and a technical interview (such as a coding assessment) while other roles may include behavioral interviews and a writing assessment.

Generally, we'll evaluate your skills and experience against our current business needs. We'll ask you about your academic and work experience, and you can ask questions, too. Be prepared to tell about your achievements and the value you could bring to Cisco.

  1. Do your research. In addition to exploring different Cisco training and tutorials (and if the position you’re applying to is focused on Splunk, Splunk’s specific training and certifications), you should also check out our customer success stories and Cisco blogs.
  2. Come curious, come hungry! We want our candidates to be eager to learn. We encourage you to ask questions about Cisco, the team, and the position during your interview. We also want to see that you are driven and excited to discover new things.
  3. Most importantly, we want to understand who YOU are. Be prepared to tell us about yourself: your background, your accomplishments and why you’re interested in the role.

Drive your own progress and direct your career growth by identifying opportunities, adding value, and raising your hand to get involved in assignments that will stretch you beyond your current role. Learn more at our Career Growth & Learning page.

Each job posting will have a list of qualifications. Be sure to review it to understand if you are a fit based on your skill sets and education requirements. For example, you may be a better fit for an internship position over an apprenticeship based on certain job requirements.

Additionally, some positions may have location requirements. Relocation is on a case-by-case basis and depends on various factors including business needs and type of role. With that said, we offer flexible work practices and allow some employees the option of working remotely.

The job description will also provide an in-depth overview of the position and team so you can assess if it is a position that interests you!

If you are unsure if you are a fit, we encourage you to apply anyway. If you are selected to move forward in the process, your recruiter can answer any specific questions you have around the role, qualifications, location, visa or work permits and more!

We deeply value and welcome the skills, creativity, and unique perspectives that each candidate brings to our company, and are committed to promoting fairness, honesty, and originality in all aspects of our hiring process. To ensure the integrity in your application process and reliability of our evaluations, we require appropriate candidate input when using emerging Generative AI technologies like ChatGPT and co-pilots.

Our perspective? Any tools used to prepare yourself for the hiring process should not replace your authentic thoughts, experiences, and capabilities.

Read more about our perspective on which behaviors are permitted (and not) in the Generative AI Best Practices and Permitted Uses overview here.

There are millions of ways people are using AI technologies when applying for jobs, writing resumes, and preparing for interviews. Here are a few examples of when you should and should NOT use AI during Cisco’s hiring process.
DO use AI to…
  • Ask for tips on how to prepare for different types of tests and interviews
  • Structure thoughts, check readability, and enhance clarity of responses, emails, resumes, and cover letters
  • Review job listings to find keywords to use in your resume or cover letter that accurately reflect your personal experience
  • Brainstorm multiple approaches to solving a coding problem or system design question
  • Review code for errors or suggest improvement
  • As a calculator
Do NOT use AI to…
  • Generate scripted responses to write your resume, cover letter, or writing sample (that means no copying and pasting!)
  • Generate a scripted response to complete an assessment
  • Create a script to read from to respond to an interview question
  • Create imaginary, dishonest, or inaccurate thoughts and experiences
  • Generate a solution to a coding problem or design question in real-time
  • Generate entire code segments and present them as your own work

The most important part? Make sure you (yes, the real, authentic, human you) are always driving your application process. Our teams want to know your unique thoughts, learn about your individual experiences, and see the ways you process information! Have more questions? Read more at our Generative AI Best Practices and Permitted Uses overview here.
